A Taste of Oregon with Elouan

Even though summer is over, Miami is still way too hot for red wine. I try to keep cool with white wine and rosé, which I’ve become quite an advocate for. I recently grabbed this 2015 Elouan Rosé from Publix – I was attracted to the stylish label (and it doesn’t hurt that it was on sale for $17.99).

This is the first release under the Elouan label from former California wine maker Joseph Wagner. It blends three of Oregon’s top wine regions – Umpqua, Willamette, and Rogue Valleys – with the majority of the fruit coming from the warmest of the three valleys, Rogue. The diversity of these cool climate areas combined with a long growing season creates wine with intensity of fruit flavor, structure, and a fresh vibrant acidity. This is a bespoke rosé where grapes were grown and harvested with the specific intention of making rosé; and not a saignée rosé, which can be a by-product of making red wine.

It’s pink with some copper in color and has a fruity aroma. The fruit forwardness follows onto the palate with raspberry and strawberry flavors, along with balanced acidity and hints of lemon. It was a little too fruit forward for my taste, but it wasn’t bad at all. It is great for hanging out by the pool, sunning at the beach, or dining at a picnic. Next time I want a rosé of this price point/similar-bodied profile, I would go for Kim Crawford’s rosé instead. 3/5.
