Pouring Over Pages Podcast at Hosmer Winery with Julia Hoyle

I recently stayed in the Finger Lakes at Glen Hollow and took advantage of the local wineries. I especially enjoyed my visit to Hosmer Winery because I had the pleasure of interviewing winemaker Julia Hoyle for Pouring Over Pages Podcast.

About Hosmer Winery

Hosmer Winery is home to Patrician Verona Vineyard established in 1972, comprised of the nearly 70 acres of grapes that provide Hosmer Winery with the fruit to remain a fully functioning estate winery. Hosmer Winery Owners Cameron and Maren Hosmer are quite literally surrounded by the vineyard they planted nearly 40 years ago. As a pioneering family in the Finger Lakes wine region, they are dedicated to sustainable farming and forward-thinking. Their son Tim Hosmer is the vineyard manager and owner of Benchmark Custom Vineyard Planting, and he works closely with staff to oversee vineyard and tasting room operations. He also works with many of the neighboring wineries. By preserving and building soil the grapes are grown on and exploring new ways to reduce environmental impacts, the vines can inhabit a site less altered by modern agricultural inputs. The wines can portray a truer reflection of the Patrician Verona Vineyard site.

About Julia Hoyle

Born in Philadelphia, Julia Hoyle found herself in the Finger Lakes by way of Hobart and William Smith Colleges where she studied French and Women’s Studies. In 2009, as a college student, she took a job in the tasting room at Fox Run Vineyards on Seneca Lake. After taking an interest in cellar operations, Julia spent a harvest in the cellar at Atwater Winery before taking a full-time position as assistant winemaker at Sheldrake Point Winery in December of 2013. She came to Hosmer in 2016. Julia’s winemaking style focuses on the quality of fruit with as little as possible added to the wine, to make it reflective of the soil, the grape, season, and growing conditions.

The Pouring Over Pages Podcast Episode

My co-host Maritza and I met Julia on a very windy, but sunny, August day. She graciously showed us around the grounds and gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the facilities. We even met Wyatt, a cute and charismatic vineyard dog (who is legit a little supervisor).

We sat down in one of the storage rooms to record and discussed everything from her journey in the industry to equality and representation to her hopes for the future. Don’t miss out on this special episode!
