What a Hoot!

Since I don’t have a good wine bar or liquor store near me, I tend to get a lot of wines at Publix, my local supermarket. Lately, I’ve seen a few new wines on the shelf, including Day Owl Rosé. I was attracted to the cute, yet minimalistic, label and its description:

“Day sippers, day trippers—this one’s for you…Nighttime’s for catching Z’s. The day belongs to Rosé.”

Produced by Mark Rasmussen, a leading California winemaker with more than 35 years of winemaking experience, and Kryss Speegle, a globetrotting winemaker, this is a Rosé dedicated to living life to the fullest, seizing each day—and most importantly—savoring the moment.

Barbera is the primary varietal in Day Owl Rosé. This Italian varietal is meant to be enjoyed young, so right now. The grapes are pressed with minimal skin contact and go through a cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks.

The wine is copper pink in color and has a strong citrus and strawberry aroma. It’s very citrus forward and zesty, with berries taking a back seat on the palate. It has a nice balance of acidity and dryness. It’s light, fresh, and refreshing, perfect for day drinking – just like the label suggests. It is $15.99 at Publix. I paired it with oysters Rockefeller and Argentinean red shrimp pasta. 3.5/5.
