Finger Lakes Travel Itinerary for Cayuga Lake

This month, I went to the Finger Lakes for my husband’s 40th birthday. I had an amazing time and some of you have asked for my Finger Lakes travel itinerary. I stayed on Cayuga Lake, so my activities were centered around that area. In the past, I’ve stayed on Seneca Lake and Canandaigua Lake.

About the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region developed thousands of years ago when they were carved by successive waves of glaciers, creating cuts as deep as 618 feet below sea level. The cuts became lakes and they are vital to region’s viticulture. This cool climate region benefits greatly from the temperature-moderating influence of the deep lakes which supports quality grape growing

Finger Lakes Travel

✈️ When it comes to travel, you can fly in and out of Rochester Airport (you could do Syracuse as well). A rental car is a must. Ubers and taxis are not readily available.

🏠 I booked a house right on the lake near Seneca Falls, which is at the top of Cayuga Lake, making it easier to grab food, step into town, etc.

🍷 Wineries: This time, I stopped by @buttonwoodgrove and @sixeightycellars. Other great wineries I’ve visited on Cayuga Lake are @Hosmerwinery and @sheldrakepoint.

✨️ Activities: We walked around Seneca Falls and visited Women’s Rights National Historical Park. We hiked at Taughannock Falls State Park and saw a massive waterfall. Because our house was on the lake, we spent a lot of time swimming, kayaking, and fishing. Next time, I’d like to rent a boat.

🍴 We ordered food to the house a couple of times, but we also stopped by O’Malley’s Lakeside Tavern and Parker’s On Fall. We ate at Wolffy’s Grill and Marina right on Cayuga Lake, but it was mediocre—just good for the view and drinks. We also grabbed some provisions at Sauders Store, which has an old timey vibe and is owned and operated by the Mennonite community. We wanted to stop by Max’s Custard (it looked packed) but didn’t have time.
